The idea is simple, use your existing high speed data card to provide Internet access via WiFi. People use them for their car's, boats, for rapidly deployable wifi access points anywhere your high speed data card works.
The Metrix Stompbox kit is the ultimate EVDO/HSPDA wifi router. The ideas for these boxes are limitless. We have been building these boxes as custom orders for customers and decided a Metrix kit was long overdue. Why go to 5 different online stores to get your parts when we can give you everything you need right here and get the professional support you expect from Metrix.
The Stompbox II kit is based on a Soekris net4521 single board computer. This kit comes with two PC-Card/PCMCIA slots for you high speed data card and other PC-Card such as USB, or second Wifi card. The Wifi is provided via the mini-pci wireless card that comes with it. The EVDO/HSPDA to wifi routing and NAT is handled by our Pyramid Linux operating system. The Stompbox kit provides you incredible flexibility to do whatever you want.
Some great applications for this kit:
Mobile hotspot
Access Point with captive portal
Automobile fleet management (add a GPS!)
Kit comes with:
Soekris Net4521 Board and Metal Case
CM9 802.11a/b/g
u.fl to RP-TNC pigtail
5dbi RP-TNC Rubber Ducky Antenna
DC power supply for normal 110/220 operation
128mb Compact Flash card with Pyramid Linux pre-installed
Basically you add the cellular card and its ready to go. It advised that you get an antenna for your cellular card to operate this system with the case closed. The case has a big impact on HSPDA/EVDO performance so an external antenna is a must.
We have tested this kit so far with the following cards:
Novatel Merlin S620/V620 EVDO
KPC-650 EVDO
U720 EVDO
U730 HSPDA
We are pros at getting EVDO and HSPDA cards working in Pyramid Linux so if you card is not listed, don't worry we can more than likely support it. Please feel free to contact us with any question you may have or if you are interested in quantity purchases.
Thanks to Stompbox Networks for the original stompbox idea and documentation!
